How can I set up the uTest VPN?


What is uTest VPN?

uTest VPN is a Virtual Private Network that allows accessing and testing customers’ restricted resources that are not publicly accessible. uTest utilizes the OpenVPN Connect client to establish a secure connection between your device and the Internet by encrypting your data and online activity.

VPN Requirements on uTest Projects

Some uTest projects require the use of the uTest VPN in order to access and test a customer's specific resources. When the VPN is required, it will be mentioned in the project or test cycle, such as the In Scope or Special Instructions sections. In order to participate in these projects, you will need to use the new uTest VPN.

You should only be using the VPN for the specific testing requested in your uTest project or test cycle. Remember to disconnect from the uTest VPN when not testing.

What is OpenVPN?

OpenVPN is software that establishes a secure connection between your computer and the Internet by encrypting your data and online activity. Think of it as a tunnel that protects your information from unauthorized access.

Getting Started with uTest VPN:

uTest offers two different VPN servers to the customers, i.e., the US region server and the EU region server.

US VPN

EU VPN

Please only use the correct VPN server as required in the cycle overview.

Windows, Mac, and Linux

Download and Install the OpenVPN Connect App

Before you can connect to the uTest VPN you first need to download the OpenVPN connect app or the user-locked profile that can be added to the OpenVPN app if already installed.

  1. Open the below links on a browser depending on the region of the VPN you want to use as instructed in the cycle overview:
    1. US region VPN: https://tester-us.utestvpn.com
    2. EU region VPN: https://tester-eu.utestvpn.com
  2. Click "Sign in with SAML" button which opens the Applause/uTest Sign-In page.
    1. If you already signed in to the Applause internal platform and you face an error please sign out of the platform and then click on the "Sign in with SAML" button again.
  3. Enter your uTest account credentials and click "Sign in"
    1. If your uTest account also has multi-factor authentication enabled, enter the one-time code from your installed MFA authenticator app.
  4. Download and install the OpenVPN Connect installer that matches the operating system of your device.
  5. Note that the OpenVPN installer will be downloaded and will include your pre-configured profile.
    1. macOS users need to download the installer for Intel or Apple Silicon, depending on your Mac’s processor. To confirm your processor type, go to the Apple menu > About This Mac.
    2. If you already have OpenVPN installed, you can download only the user-locked profile (.ovpn file) by clicking on the Yourself (user-locked profile) link from the website. This profile can be manually imported and used on any OpenVPN Connect app.
  6. Install the downloaded OpenVPN connect app and grant any permissions if prompted by the installer.
  7. Once the installation is complete, you will be able to see your profile in the OpenVPN client
    1. If you downloaded the user-locked-profile separately, you can add it by clicking the  " + " icon and uploading the downloaded .ovpn file via the Upload File tab. You can also add another region’s VPN profile if needed based on the instructions in the test cycle.
    2. You can also add another region’s VPN profile to have multiple profiles on the device and switch between the VPN regions as needed in the test cycle.

Connecting to uTest VPN

  1. Open the OpenVPN Connect client
  2. Turn ON the toggle or click Connect for the desired VPN profile you want to connect to.
    1. If you already signed in to the Applause internal platform and you face an error sign out of the platform and then click on the "Sign in with SAML" button again.
  3. Enter your uTest email and password when prompted. 
    1. If your uTest account also has multi-factor authentication enabled, enter the one-time code from your installed MFA authenticator app.
  4. Navigate to whatismyipaddress.com and verify that your IP address reflects the VPN connection. It should show the following IP address based on the server you are connected to.
    1. US Region uTest VPN: 100.26.65.148
    2. EU Region uTest VPN: 63.34.131.87

When you finish testing, open the OpenVPN Connect client again and turn off the toggle or tap "Disconnect" to end your VPN session.

Android and iOS Devices

Download and Install the OpenVPN Connect App

  1. Open any browser and open any of the following links, depending on the region of the VPN you want to use:
    1. US region VPN: https://tester-us.utestvpn.com
    2. EU region VPN: https://tester-eu.utestvpn.com
  2. Tap on "Sign in with SAML" to be directed to the Applause/uTest Sign In page
    1. If you already signed in to the Applause internal platform and you face an error sign out of the platform and then click on the "Sign in with SAML" button again.
  3. Enter your correct uTest account credentials and tap on "Sign in".
    1. If your uTest account has multi-factor authentication enabled, enter the one-time code from your MFA authenticator app.
  4. Tap on the Yourself (user-locked profile) link to download the .ovpn file linked to your uTest account.
  5. Then select the OpenVPN Connect installer that matches your operating system (Android or iOS)On the OpenVPN documentation page, tap on the OpenVPN Connect link
    2. Tap on Google Play or App Store button based on your device
  6. Download the OpenVPN Connect app from the Google PlayStore or Apple Appstore page.
  7. Open the installed app and grant any permissions if prompted on your device.
  8. Tap on the " + " icon or navigate to the Upload File.
  9. Upload your .ovpn profile that you downloaded earlier.
    1. Alternatively, you can tap on the downloaded profile and open it via the OpenVPN app to import the profile.
  10. Your device is now ready to use the uTest VPN using the OpenVPN

Connecting to uTest VPN

  1. Open the OpenVPN Connect app
  2. Turn ON the toggle or tap on Connect for the desired VPN profile you want to connect to.
    1. On the Applause/uTest authentication page if you already signed in to the Applause internal platform and you face a user mismatch error message sign out of the internal platform and connect to the VPN again.
  3. Enter your uTest email and password if and when prompted. 
    1. If your uTest account also has multi-factor authentication enabled, enter the one-time code from your installed MFA authenticator app.
  4. Navigate to whatismyipaddress.com and verify that your IP address reflects the VPN connection. It should show the following IP address based on the server you are connected to.
    1. US Region uTest VPN: 100.26.65.148
    2. EU Region uTest VPN: 63.34.131.87
  5. Now you are ready to test while connected to the uTest VPN

When you finish testing, open the OpenVPN Connect app again and turn off the toggle or tap “Disconnect” to end your VPN session.
