Re. Sunsetting of uTest Proxies and moving to uTest VPNs
We are looking to move (during the next month, February 1st 2025) from uTest Proxy to VPN. For this current period we will run both in parallel (however before we sunset we will monitor those cycles continuing to leverage the old proxy). To learn how to set the uTest VPN, please check this knowledge base: How can I set up the uTest VPN.
Why is uTest Switching to OpenVPN?
uTest is adopting OpenVPN to enhance your testing experience and replace the prior uTest Proxies:
Enhanced Security: OpenVPN protects your personal information and test-related data.
Improved Access Control: uTest can now manage access to specific tests and resources, ensuring only authorized testers can participate.
Future-Proofing: This technology allows uTest greater flexibility for platform improvements and expansion.
How can I set up the Proxy?
To learn how to set up uTest proxy on your specific device using PAC (Proxy auto configuration), please navigate to the below links:
Important: uTest proxy should only be used when it is explicitly stated to be used in the cycle overview. Avoid using it outside of uTest projects or without the TTL's approval.

Apple TV (tvOS)
Prerequisites
A macOS device with the Apple Configurator app installed
Pairing Apple TV with Mac
Once you make sure both, your Apple TV and Mac are on the same WiFi network, follow these steps to pair them:
Launch Apple Configurator on your Mac, then plug in the Apple TV and then a monitor or TV to power
On the Apple TV, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Remote App and Devices
Next, on your Mac, from the Apple Configurator menu, choose Paired Devices
Click Pair against your Apple TV in the Paired Devices list
Enter the six-digit authentication code that appears on the screen of your Apple TV
Close the Paired Devices window in Apple Configurator
You should now see your Apple TV in the All Devices window
If you’re facing issues with pairing the Apple TV with the Apple Configurator app, please try any of these troubleshooting steps:
Remove any “Not connected” devices on the Paired Devices pop up
Make sure both Apple TV and Mac devices are connected to the same network
If the Paired Devices list doesn’t find anything, you should check xCode: from xCode open the Window menu on the top bar > select “Devices and Simulators”. Your Apple TV should be shown here. If there is no error message or infinite loading, it means that your device is paired at least with xCode. Otherwise, try to pair your device using xCode “Pair Device” option (see the below subbulet point)
Go back to Apple Configurator, check once again if there is any device on the “Paired Devices” option, if there is a device, select the device and “Pair”. If not, you need to check another step
Open Quicktime, check if you can mirror the Apple TV screen on Quicktime, this sometimes forces the pair on the other apps. Then check Apple Configurator once again. If it is still not enabled, you can repeat any of the steps above. Close QuickTime
This can take some time, but it will work. Sometimes Quicktime provides some files that help to connect your devices, and sometimes xCode does, which is a very imprecise process, and can be frustrating
You can Unpair on your AppleTV, this is useful most of the time, then you can pair again
If none of these work, you can restart the device. This sometimes helps as well
If you don't have a lot to lose, you can factory reset your Apple TV and try again
Creating the Profile
Open the Apple Configurator app, click File, and select New Profile
Give the profile any name
Select the "Wi-Fi" option from the side menu
Type the WiFi name with which you want the proxy to be active in the SSID field
Set the Proxy Setup option to "Automatic"
In the Proxy Server URL field paste the uTest proxy PAC URL
For Security Type select “Any Personal (except WPA3-Only)” and provide your WiFi network password
Finally, save the Profile by clicking File > Save or pressing Cmd+S
Installing the Profile
Within the Apple Configurator app, select the Apple TV device
Click the "Add" button at the top of the window and choose "Profiles"
Select your saved profile and click Add
After a few seconds you’ll get a pop-up, do not click anything in the pop-up
Check your Apple TV; an install profile window should appear
Select Install and confirm your selection
Once the process is complete, restart your Apple TV device
The Apple TV should be successfully connected to uTest proxy now
Provide your uTest username and password in the authentication window
Open the Speedtest app (download the OOkla Speedtest app from the App Store) or whatismyipaddress.com in the browser to verify you’re connected to the proxy successfully. The correct setup should be - Amazon, and e.g. Windstream Ashburn, VA. The important thing here is to not have your provider, and have one related to uTest.
Starting the next time, you just need to install the profile to connect with the uTest proxy.
FAQ & KI Workarounds
When I upload the profile from Apple Configurator to Apple TV, there is an error message that says the device is “not supervised”
If you have followed the instructions for Creating and loading the Profile above, this message should disappear in a few seconds. If not, there was a missed step during profile creation or you have used the Global HTTP Proxy which leads to a KI with this message (to fix this you need a business or school account).
After restarting the AppleTV device, when the profile has been loaded it is asking for uTest Proxy credentials, I enter my credentials, and it is still prompting me again.
This could be happening because you entered a wrong value on the profile, maybe the WiFi name or password, or even the Proxy credentials. In this case, you will have to hard reset the Apple TV, unplugging from the electricity supply. Then if the Apple Configurator allows you to see the device, you can remove the profile (Action/Remove/Profiles).
Disabling Proxy
Open Settings on your Apple TV
Select General
Select Profile
Select the profile you installed earlier
Select Remove
Restart your Apple TV and the uTest proxy should be now disconnected
Important Notes
If you’re having problems with uTest proxy, make sure you’re entering the correct email and password in the authentication pop-up. Try resetting your uTest password
Also, verify you provided correct details in the profile
Additional Notes
If you face any problems with proxy while using Firefox, then navigate to Firefox Options > Network Settings, click Settings, select "Use system proxy settings" and click Ok
For additional information on uTest proxy check the uTest Proxy section in the Tester Service knowledge base
